Consider the importance of Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife Essay
à She seems to believe that the man sent her a letter, and that her mother ripped it up, so she left home and, out of spite, married Curley. Even thought she never received the letter, she still clings on to the tiny bit of hope that one day she will be in the movies. Unfortunately, she dies before she has the chance to fulfill her dream, just as Lennie does. This represents and shows the reader how lives never go to plan. Their dreams are wishes for untarnished happiness and the freedom to fulfill their dreams is non-existant. As well as being important in the story, she also has some distinct unimportance. In the novel, she is never given her own name; she has the title of Curleys Wife and is looked upon as his property. It is as if she has no human rights. Whilst everyone else on the ranch has a name, including Crooks the stable buck, she is just defined as the wife of a man she hates. She tells Lennie that, ââ¬Å"he ainââ¬â¢t a nice fella. â⬠She doesnââ¬â¢t like being locked up in the house, and ends up having to sneak around so Curley doesnââ¬â¢t catch her. She also seems insignificant in comparison to the other characters, as she has no specific job on the ranch. She seems to have a lot of time on her hands, because she is heavily made up, and her hair seems to be perfect each time she appears. She fills her time in this way. She also wanders the ranch constantly claiming that sheââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"looking for Curley. â⬠This is because otherwise she is always in the house or hiding from Curley. For example, in Chapter One, when Lennie and George have first arrived, she is stood at the doorway asking for Curley, and after she has left, Curley arrives and asks if anyone has seen his wife. This proves that she is always hiding from Curley, and he is always keeping a watchful eye on her. When she dies, and is lying in the hay, Curleys intentions seem to be just to get revenge, nobody mourns her death. Only Slim has the decency to ââ¬Å"touch her cheek,â⬠and check her pulse under her ââ¬Å"slightly twisted neck. â⬠Curley jumps up and immediately says, ââ¬Å"I know who done it. â⬠His only thought is to kill Lennie. Ever since Lennie crushed Curleys hand heââ¬â¢s been planning revenge, and now he has the perfect reason. Nobody stops to mourn a young, unfortunate, nai ve girlââ¬â¢s death. Even though she has been at the ranch for only two weeks, she seems to already have gathered a reputation of a tart. George generally seems to regard all women as ââ¬Å"jailbaitâ⬠but knows that thereââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"gonna be a mess ââ¬â¢bout her. â⬠Of course, he is right. The other men on the ranch also think sheââ¬â¢s a tart, and Whit thinks that Curleys wife has ââ¬Å"got the eye goinââ¬â¢ all the time,â⬠and Candy also says that ââ¬Å"She got the eye. â⬠Neither of these comments are factual, but they give you a bad impression of Curleys wife. When Curleys Wife first appears, her ââ¬Å"hair is in curlsâ⬠, she has ââ¬Å"rouged lipsâ⬠, and is wearing ââ¬Å"red fluffy mules. â⬠She is wearing a lot of red and this usually represents prostitution. When she has left after flaunting her body, George remarks, ââ¬Å"Jesus! What a tramp! â⬠Whit also says ââ¬Å"she ainââ¬â¢t concealing nothing. â⬠She could be more modest but she just wants male attention and the only way she can do this is by showing off her body. Although the main impression of Curleys Wife is that of a tart, there are many qualities that make you feel pity for her. She isnââ¬â¢t bright, and has an isolated life in her house, trying to hide from Curley. She says, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢ like Curley,â⬠and clearly regrets marrying him. When describing her dream, she uses ââ¬Å"I coulda,â⬠and not ââ¬Å"I will. â⬠The girl has no hope and believes her life will be living on the ranch, doing nothing but hiding from Curley. She is also very nai ve, in the last Chapter, when Lennie kills her, she is led in the hay and is described as ââ¬Å"prettyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"sweetâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"youngâ⬠. All of these characteristics are those of an innocent girl, the young woman Curleys Wife really was. Curley only wants revenge for her death, Slim is the only person who checks her pulse, and even tells Curley to stay behind, but revenge is all Curley wants. Even Candy curses over her dead body, he says, ââ¬Å"you god-damn trampâ⬠and claims that she ruined his dream of owning the ranch with George and Lennie. Candy blames Curleys Wife, who was really just a lonely girl, and needed someone to talk too. How could a company reduce it's high of absenteeism Research Proposal - 1
How could a company reduce it's high of absenteeism - Research Proposal Example Notwithstanding its size, it has been experiencing absenteeism problems. The company was founded in 1930 as American Airways; however the first flights commenced in 1934. American Airlines operates out of four hubs in the USA- one each at JFK, Miami, Oââ¬â¢Hare and Los Angeles Airports, while its headquarters remains at Dallas Forth Worth Airport. American Airlines has a fleet of 621 aircraft as of December 2010. Tom Horton is the President and Gerard Arpey is the current CEO. American Airlines is one of the most reputed airlines in the USA. However due to its sheer size, it has had its share of problems. Among these, absenteeism has been reported a key factor affecting its service delivery. Through this project, I seek not only to find the reasons behind this unfortunate circumstance; I also attempt to find the reasons and to try to solve the problem by applying the theories of management and organizational behavior towards this end. I hope I have impressed upon at least some employees the value of honest and true service and the need to cut down absenteeism to the very minimum. 5. What do you think that American Airlines needs to do in order to motivate you and other employees to work more honestly and as a team to improve service levels, efficiency and effectiveness at American Airlines? (Thank you for your support and assistance. I assure you that this information will be kept strictly confidential, and will not be shared with anyone except my class teacher and fellow students for the purpose of my assignment). In addition to talking to people, making observations can be a good source of primary research on a problem. Since I was looking at the causes of absenteeism and wanted to correct the situation, I chose to relax in front of the American Airlines Customer Service Counter one afternoon and observe service attitudes in action. 3. Morale and work attitude determined through demeanor, conduct with passengers, willing to hear them out

Basic Quantitative Analysis - Essay Example The glossary- like essay is prepared based principally on the typical book by Paul C. Cozby titled Methods in Behavioral Research. Some other established and authentic books are also cited. It is used to compare between two or more individual students of two or more divisions, classes or schools or the performance of two or more classes or schools, or the performance of an individual under two or more dissimilar testing conditions in terms of possession of some attributes or characteristics. Gravetter, Forzano (2008) assert that when the data is presented not in numerical values we have no alternative other than comparing the proportions or percentiles (p.452). In order to compare the achievements of two individuals or groups, the means are compared. It is possible when the scores are distributed in numerical figures. We compare mean score first, and then we do means. Contrary to both, in co relational study, we compare two variables for each and every individual, included in a particular group, and the score of different groups. If the data is numerical we resort to co relational studies, if not we use chi-square. (p.453) The name pie chart is given to a circle diagram. In determining the circumference of a circle we have to take into consideration a quantity known as ââ¬Ëpieââ¬â¢. In this form of graphical representation, the data is represented through the sections or portions of circle. It is a graph in which frequencies are represented by bars, arranged one touching the next. The height of the bar will represent the frequency of the class. The area of the rectangle is proportionate to its frequency. In this way the total area of a bar graph which includes all those rectangular bars will represent the total frequency or ââ¬ËNââ¬â¢. A polygon is a many-sided closed figure. A frequency polygon is a graphic representation of a given frequency distribution. In this graph, the midpoints of the classes are plotted on the X-axis, to

A plausible scientific explanation accounting for the development of Essay
A plausible scientific explanation accounting for the development of diverse sexual orientations in humans - Essay Example It is therefore a subject that has elicited a lot of debate and controversies, especially with the numerous scientific researches that has been done by the different scientists. Scholars have also attempted to come up with theories all in an effort to justify their ideas and explanations. So at the end of the paper we should be in a position to appreciate whether ââ¬Å"Gay, straight and the reason whyâ⬠by LeVay, S. (2010) offer answers to the origin and existence of homosexuality. LeVay did a study of the brain to ascertain the cause and the differences in the sexual orientation of the different people and had some interesting reports and facts to present (LeVay &Valente, 2006). The main focus of his study was the brain of the males who were gay and the men who were straight. His study was based on the fact that a part of the hypothalamus section of the brain of the males and the females is always different in size due to their differences in sex (LeVay &Valente, 2006). He therefore wanted to see if this part of the brain had any differences for the men who were straight and the men who were gay. He therefore studied several samples of the brain tissue collected from the men who had passed on and used this to do his studies (LeVay &Valente, 2006). Although his conclusion proved that there was quite a significant amount of difference, other people against his line of through felt that this was because his study was purely focused on the men who had died of the AIDS complications among other sexually transmitted diseases (LeVay &Valente, 2006). However, this was not entirely true as he used also the tissues of the people whose death was from other causes while others who died but in perfectly good health. This is why he later on noted that other research done after he also proved that he was right that there was a difference in the brain, especially the particular section of

Time Value of Money Application Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Time Value of Money Application Paper - Essay Example The following are some important concepts of time value of money: Future value of money at a particular point is equal to the original sum of money plus interest rate multiplied by original sum of money. Suppose a retirement plan financial service provider receives $100 at the rate of 8% per annum; the future value of that fund will be: Given above scenario, present value is a reverse of the future value in that it shows how much certain amount of dollar worth today. The above formula can equally be used to calculate present value, in this case it will be inverted; if the calculations involve compound interest then the amount in inner braces will be raised to a power of n. the resulting value is otherwise called discounted value. This is the cost for borrowing or lending money or can be viewed as the yield to which money can earn. This interest rate can be categorized into nominal rate of interest and effective rate of interest2. Nominal interest rate is that rate of interest not adjusted for inflation whereas effective interest rate has full effect of compounding and is adjusted for inflation. Commercial banks make good use of time value of money in all their transactions ââ¬â accepting deposits, lending to firms and corporate organizations and even borrowing short-term instruments from other financial institutions. For example, if a commercial bank accepts savings from a client at 5% per annum, assuming the client deposits $200 every two months for a year; the client might unwittingly be glad for receiving the 5% in addition to security he/she enjoys from the bank. However, these funds can be lent out at 15% to a credit card company who now uses this to service its customers. The difference between 15% paid by Credit Card Company and 5% paid to this client with the commercial bank reflects the of time value of money. Using above example, credit card financial
